7 Pro Tips to Organize Any Space

I love giving advice on tailoring the process of aesthetic organization to every room of your home. Though the organizational process can look a bit different depending on which area you’re working on, there are a few general ideas that you’ll want to keep in mind no matter what you’re organizing. These guidelines are an amazing tool to get any area into shape— and make it easy to keep it that way!

One Space at a Time

Thoughtful organization takes time! One of the biggest setbacks in getting organized is trying to do too much at once. You’ll wind up feeling overwhelmed, burn out quickly, and you may never actually complete a project.

Walk around your home and take note of the spaces that feel unproductive or inefficient. Take it one space at a time, and make sure to complete an area before moving on to a new one. Try creating a schedule of when you plan to work on each space!

Clear it Out

Once you’ve chosen what you want to work on, the first step in organizing any space is to take everything out. This is the foundation that needs to be laid before moving on to any subsequent step. Create a staging area where you’ll begin to edit your items— your made-up bed, bathroom floor, or kitchen floor. Don’t forget to protect the area with an old sheet or towel if you’re working with materials that can spill!

After you’ve taken inventory of what you have, you’ll need to begin categorizing and grouping like items. This is where the process begins to look very different depending on where you’re working, so if you need a little help, check out some of my other posts on organizing specific areas in your home!

Edit

In this step, you’ll begin to cull through your items with a scrutinizing eye— keeping what you truly use and need, and getting rid of what you don’t. Try not to keep any clothing that you haven’t worn in the past twelve months, any kitchen or bathroom products that have expired, or any other items that haven’t served you over the past year. Head to my post explaining the “Keep, Donate, Sell” method I recommend for editing your wardrobe. With this method, you’ll want to grab three bins (keep, sell, donate) and separate your items accordingly. The same principles can be applied to to bathroom and kitchen organization, though you may want to “toss” rather than “sell.”

Organization Solutions

Once you’ve narrowed down your inventory, make a game plan for how you’ll set up your space. Choosing the right organization solutions can be a game changer— they’ll maximize the space you have and give each item a “home.” Be sure to measure your space (it doesn’t hurt to do this twice!) and choose an aesthetic that matches your home. The Container Store is an excellent resource for finding all kinds of products and solutions!

Set it Up

Now that you’ve chosen which items to keep and created a functional system using the right solutions, it’s time to start adding your inventory back into your space. You’ve done all the hard work of sorting and planning, so this step can be especially gratifying when you start to see your space come together! Be sure to set up your space in a way that keeps everyday items easily accessible.

Label

One of the best ways to ensure that items will be returned to their designated spots by all family members is to label! Invest in a label maker or purchase pre-made printable labels, and take the guess-work out of keeping with your newly minted system.

No matter the space you’re working with, your home has the potential to be aesthetically organized! With the right mindset, a smart setup, and functional organizational solutions, you can transform any space.
